Toyota Pre-Collision System: How Does It Work?

Toyota Safety Sense Banner

The Toyota Safety Sense™ package is the talk of the town around Fairmont. That’s because this advanced system works hard to keep you safer on every Kingwood drive. Toyota Safety Sense™ includes the incredible Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD)*. But how does the Toyota Pre-Collision System work?

Through the use of advanced road-monitoring technologies, the Pre-Collision System offers an alert when you need to hit the brakes due to objects in your path. When needed, the Toyota Pre-Collision System can even bring your vehicle to a complete stop. Learn more below about how the Toyota Safety Sense™ suite featuring the Toyota Pre-Collision System can keep your Deep Creek, MD family safe out on the road.

How Does the Toyota Pre-Collision System Work?

So, how does the Toyota Pre-Collision System work to help you avoid accidents? As described above, the Toyota Pre-Collision System relies on advanced road-monitoring technologies to help mitigate collisions. The Toyota Pre-Collision System works in three phases:

  • Phase 1– Alert: If the system detects a vehicle, pedestrian, or bicyclist in your path, the system will use audio and/or visual forward collision warnings.
  • Phase 2 – Brake Assist: To help mitigate a frontal collision, the system will use brake assist.
  • Phase 3 –  Automatic Braking: If the warning signs are not acted upon by the driver, the Pre-Collision System may deploy automatic braking.

Toyota Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection

In your Toyota vehicle that has the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, the system scans your surroundings while you make turns or proceed forward on your route. The latest system has enhanced intersection support with improved detection range capabilities. Under certain circumstances, this system can detect oncoming vehicles in more than one lane while turning, and vehicles approaching from a lateral direction. What’s more, along with Bicyclist and Pedestrian Detection, TSS 3.0 even offers motorcyclist detection in certain situations.

*The Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Pedestrian Detection (PD) is designed to determine if impact is imminent and help reduce impact speed and damage in certain frontal collisions involving a vehicle, a pedestrian, a bicycle, or a motorcyclist. PCS w/PD is not a substitute for safe and attentive driving. System effectiveness depends on many factors, such as speed, size and position of pedestrian or bicyclist and weather, light and road conditions. See Owner’s Manual for limitations.
